Every Stop Has a Story

Wedding Bells and Jilted Brides

The Crawleys' parish church on screen, where Mary married Matthew and Edith was jilted, stands on the site of an Anglo-Saxon minster.

The Grantham Arms

A row of private houses opposite the church played the Grantham Arms, Downton's village pub, where Tom Branson lodges for a time.

The Village Square

The green between the church and the library became Downton's village square, dressed for the Downton fair and the scene of many chance meetings.

Crawley House

Isobel and Matthew Crawley's home on screen was for centuries one of Bampton's three vicarages.

Downton Cottage Hospital

Dr Clarkson's cottage hospital on screen was built as Bampton's free grammar school, standing here by 1653 thanks to Robert Veysey's bequest.
